What Your Blood Pressure Numbers Actually Mean

Blood pressure is one of the most important numbers in your health profile — and one of the most misunderstood. Here's a quick refresher.

Systolic vs. diastolic

The top number (systolic) measures pressure when your heart contracts. The bottom number (diastolic) measures pressure between beats. Both matter.

What's normal

  • Normal: less than 120 / less than 80
  • Elevated: 120–129 / less than 80
  • Stage 1 hypertension: 130–139 / 80–89
  • Stage 2 hypertension: 140+ / 90+
  • Hypertensive crisis: 180+ / 120+ (seek immediate care)
